Tras sufrir una crisis creativa, el escritor Gustav Von Aschenbach llega al Lido de Venecia para pasar una temporada de vacaciones en solitario, con el fin, no s\u00f3lo de reflexionar, sino tambi\u00e9n de dar descanso a un cuerpo extenuado y enfermo. En el Hotel Des Bains llama su atenci\u00f3n una familia de turistas polacos, especialmente el joven Tadzio, un adolescente por el que siente una s\u00fabita e intensa atracci\u00f3n. Contemplar a Tadzio se convierte enseguida para Aschenbach en el momento central de la jornada; y luego de su existencia. A bordo del barco que le lleva a Venecia, Aschenbach observa horrorizado a un viejo maquillado que se arrima sonriendo tontamente a un grupo de muchachos. Pero hacia el final de la historia, cuando sigue extasiado a Tadzio por las callejuelas y los canales de la ciudad, asolada por una epidemia de c\u00f3lera, Aschenbach se ha convertido en ese hombre.La muerte en Venecia, como el propio Mann sosten\u00eda, trata de la p\u00e9rdida de la dignidad del artista, pero Mann examina tambi\u00e9n la relaci\u00f3n entre el arte y la vida. Aschenbach cree que con trabajo y disciplina puede dominar la vida y aun moldearla hasta convertirla en arte. Las desordenadas emociones y la pasi\u00f3n indomable que Tadzio-Dionisos le inspira, le obligar\u00e1n a admitir que esa convicci\u00f3n es una falacia. Los elementos m\u00edticos de la novela ofrecen el contexto necesario para trazar un retrato de la homosexualidad. Escrita con sutileza y con una profunda penetraci\u00f3n psicol\u00f3gica, esta obra es un vivido relato de lo que significa enamorarse.La novela corta era tal vez la forma art\u00edstica ideal para Thomas Mann; e indudablemente, desde sus primeros presagios inquietantes hasta el pat\u00e9tico cl\u00edmax final, es una obra maestra en su g\u00e9nero.
