Para escribirlas llev\u00f3 a cabo un viaje por las zonas que fueron teatro de la acci\u00f3n del personaje principal de estas dos novelas: El Conde de Espa\u00f1a.El t\u00edtulo de la primera, Humano Enigma, es alusivo a la extra\u00f1\u00edsima personalidad de aquel hombre que dej\u00f3 fama de sanguinario y cruel como ninguno, tanto en su actuaci\u00f3n en Barcelona durante el per\u00edodo absolutista, del reinado de Fernando VII, como en la de general en jefe carlista de Catalu\u00f1a al final del conflicto. Como el Conde de Espa\u00f1a era de origen franc\u00e9s y ten\u00eda raigambre en el otro lado de los Pirineos, Baroja complet\u00f3 su informaci\u00f3n en los lugares de donde proven\u00eda.Lo que, en esencia, le interesaba, como psic\u00f3logo, era contrastar la imagen popular del Conde, hecha por los escritores liberales y por los que fueron objeto de sus persecuciones, con im\u00e1genes, no apolog\u00e9ticas precisamente, pero que daban otra cara o faceta del hombre: la del militar del Antiguo R\u00e9gimen, con educaci\u00f3n aristocr\u00e1tica, dieciochesca y cierta dignidad exterior de noble de tiempos anteriores.Pero para que el car\u00e1cter fuera todav\u00eda m\u00e1s enigm\u00e1tico, Baroja encontraba que el Conde de Espa\u00f1a era, adem\u00e1s, una especie de humorista macabro y, como militar, m\u00e1s culto que otros muchos de su \u00e9poca.
