La trama se desarrolla al final de la primera guerra carlista y se estructura en dos historias paralelas cuyos protagonistas son por un lado Aviraneta, que aparece ya como un conspirador total, mantenedor de complej\u00edsimas relaciones diplom\u00e1ticas y labores de espionaje desde diversos pa\u00edses extranjeros (no se olvide que en aquel conflicto llegaron a intervenir en ambos bandos fuerzas polacas, alemanas, italianas, austr\u00edacas&#8230;) y por el otro lado, el joven Alvarito, que, desde Bayona, debe cruzar a Espa\u00f1a en busca de Chipiteguy, que fue secuestrado en la novela anterior.Una vez cumplida su misi\u00f3n, Alvarito vuelve a viajar a Espa\u00f1a, hasta Ca\u00f1ete, en Cuenca, en este caso para hacerse cargo de su herencia. En medio de aquella geograf\u00eda desolada y asolada por los efectos de la guerra, nos vamos a ir encontrando con un desfile de tipos que poseen hasta enorme inter\u00e9s antropol\u00f3gico, pero sobre todo, con descripciones de las consecuencias b\u00e9licas de una notable ferocidad y relatos de los hechos m\u00e1s terribles con normalidad cotidiana.La nave de los locos empieza con un \u00abPr\u00f3logo casi doctrinal sobre la novela\u00bb en el que Baroja da la r\u00e9plica aIdeas sobre la novela, de Ortega y Gasset. Baroja concibe la novela como \u00abun g\u00e9nero multiforme, proteico, en formaci\u00f3n, en fermentaci\u00f3n\u00bb, que ser\u00eda adem\u00e1s espejo de la vida. Suele recordarse su famosa definici\u00f3n en la que afirma que la novela es un saco en el que cabe todo, \u00abel libro filos\u00f3fico, el psicol\u00f3gico, la aventura, la utop\u00eda, lo \u00e9pico, todo absolutamente\u00bb.
