Escrito el libro en los a\u00f1os 1943\/44, con ocasi\u00f3n de una convalecencia que alej\u00f3 al autor de los frentes de la batalla, el rechazo psicol\u00f3gico de restricciones y privaciones se traducir\u00e1 en el sibaritismo de los protagonistas y su entorno. Asimismo, el marco de referencia, una impresionante mansi\u00f3n nobiliaria en la campi\u00f1a inglesa, obedec\u00eda a la oposici\u00f3n al abandono, deterioro y maltrato de estos monumentos, cuya continuidad se hallaba entonces seriamente comprometida. Faltan, empero referencias explicativas de la elecci\u00f3n del tema central o de la estancia en Oxford con que se inicia la trama.El argumento axial, la manifestaci\u00f3n de la gracia divina (arrepentimiento final de Lord Marchmain, adi\u00f3s definitivo de Julia a Charles o, la &#8216;llamita rojiza&#8217; ante el sagrario, causante de que el agn\u00f3stico Charles Ryder acabe por parecer &#8216;mucho m\u00e1s contento que de costumbre&#8217;), guarda, sin duda, estrecha relaci\u00f3n con la conversi\u00f3n al catolicismo del propio Evelyn Waugh. Resonancias autobiogr\u00e1ficas poseen tambi\u00e9n los a\u00f1os en Oxford, universidad en la que Waugh se licencia en Historia Moderna, precisamente en la Facultad en la que se inscribe Charles Ryder. En cuanto a la ambigua amistad de Sebastian Flyte y Charles Ryder, es de resaltar la valoraci\u00f3n que de la misma hace Cara, la mundana y experimentada amante de Lord Marchmain. En este terreno, las trayectorias de ambos amigos no s\u00f3lo resultar\u00e1n divergentes sino opuestas.
