El objeto de este episodio es explicar la g\u00e9nesis de las ideas liberales en Espa\u00f1a despu\u00e9s de la guerra de la Independencia, y parad\u00f3jicamente, Baroja lo hace desde la \u00f3ptica de un personaje ferozmente absolutista como Arteaga. El viaje de Arteaga, Riego y Aviraneta de Francia a Holanda est\u00e1 hecho a base de gu\u00edas antiguas y de estampas.La segunda narraci\u00f3n se titula Una intriga tenebrosa (Los hombres de la conspiraci\u00f3n del tri\u00e1ngulo). Esta conspiraci\u00f3n, liderada por Renovales, la cuenta el bar\u00f3n de Oiquina en Paris, en el Restaurant del Rocher de Cancale. En ella, la parte novelesca se mezcla con la historia. Para la parte hist\u00f3rica, Baroja recopil\u00f3 abundante documentaci\u00f3n en el Archivo Hist\u00f3rico Nacional y en otros archivos, adem\u00e1s de en los libros de historia.La tercera narraci\u00f3n, La Mano cortada (historia de la tierra caliente), totalmente novelada, se desarrolla en M\u00e9jico. Perseguido en Espa\u00f1a, Aviraneta se refugia en ese pa\u00eds, en el que tiene parientes, y se re\u00fane con ellos con el fin de hacer alg\u00fan dinero invirtiendo y trabajando en proyectos mineros. No obstante, su car\u00e1cter le impulsa a participar en varias aventuras de distinta \u00edndole.
