La historia est\u00e1 inspirada por un incidente vivido por el autor durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, cuando \u00e9l y su mujer fueron asaltados en 1944, siendo la esposa del propio Burgess v\u00edctima de robo y violaci\u00f3n por parte de cuatro soldados estadounidenses en las calles londinenses. Dado que se encontraba embarazada, la paliza le provoc\u00f3 un aborto. El libro trata sobre la libre voluntad y la moral, y la manipulaci\u00f3n de los individuos por fuerzas como los sistemas pol\u00edticos, la represi\u00f3n, y como estas conllevan la corrupci\u00f3n del ser humano.La naranja mec\u00e1nica cuenta la historia del nadsat-adolescente Alex y sus tres drugosamigos en un mundo de crueldad y destrucci\u00f3n. Alex tiene los principales atributos humanos: amor a la agresi\u00f3n, amor al lenguaje, amor a la belleza. Pero es joven y no ha entendido a\u00fan la verdadera importancia de la libertad, la que disfruta de un modo violento.
