A los dieciseis a\u00f1os se fuga del colegio y alista en el Ej\u00e9rcito. Dos a\u00f1os despues consigue su proposito, ya es artillero y conoce de primera mano una guerra no declarada; el asedio a Gibraltar del a\u00f1o 1727. Al finalizar la contienda regresa a Sevilla donde sufrir\u00e1 una dolorosa experiencia con una joven a la que ama. Casualmente conoce a un jefe de la Armada llamado don Blas de Lezo que le amima a enrolarse. Le impresiona de tal forma que decide trasladarse a C\u00e1diz. A partir de ese momento empieza una nueva e interesante vida; se enamora de una dullce gaditana y conoce personajes de la Armada y nuevos amigos. Embarcado en el navio Gallo Indiano parte a Veracruz con una flotilla de transporte de azogue para las minas de plata Al llegar a su destino es destacado a un guardacostas en lucha contra la pirateria y el contrabando. Una serie de peligrosas aventuras le llevaran a Yucat\u00e1n y Cuba.
