De nombre Leopold Weiss, era hijo de un abogado jud\u00edo y nieto de un rabino ortodoxo. Falleci\u00f3 en Mijas, M\u00e1laga, en 1992, y est\u00e1 enterrado en la Rauda de Granada. Considerado hoy como uno de los pensadores musulmanes m\u00e1s eminentes del siglo XX, sus originales e intr\u00e9pidos viajes por Oriente Medio superaron con mucho los de sus predecesores occidentales en amplitud y contacto \u00edntimo con las gentes y cultura de esa amplia regi\u00f3n. Su prolongada estancia en el mundo isl\u00e1mico fue, seg\u00fan sus propias palabras, m\u00e1s que \u201cla mera adaptaci\u00f3n externa de un europeo a la comunidad de musulmanes en la que hab\u00eda elegido vivir\u201d. A su regreso a Occidente, tras una ausencia de 25 a\u00f1os, desempe\u00f1\u00f3 el cargo de Ministro Plenipotenciario de Pakist\u00e1n en la ONU, y public\u00f3 un conjunto de obras entre las que destaca, aparte de su excepcional traducci\u00f3n del Cor\u00e1n, El Mensaje del Qur\u2019an, esta autobiograf\u00eda, El Camino a Meca (1954), que abarca la primera parte de su vida, y en la que da testimonio de su conversi\u00f3n al Islam y de su &#8216;transferencia de lealtad, consciente y completa, de un entorno cultural a otro&#8217;, una evoluci\u00f3n que describe l\u00facidamente en toda su peripecia sobre el fondo de sus viajes por el mundo isl\u00e1mico.
