Fue escrita en cinco vol\u00famenes, en 1862, por Victor Hugo, uno de los autores m\u00e1simportantes de la historia de la literatura francesa. Es una obra fundamental,no s\u00f3lo por sus valores literarios, sino tambi\u00e9n por su denuncia de la miseria,la pobreza y la explotaci\u00f3n; su reflexi\u00f3n sobre el bien y el mal; y su defensade la justicia, la \u00e9tica y la solidaridad humana en momentos adversos. Ha sidollevada al cine en numerosas ocasiones y es la base del mundialmente conocidomusical hom\u00f3nimo.
