Simenon parece conocer muy bien los estragos que untestamento puede provocar en una familia, por bien avenida que est\u00e9, cuando haymucho dinero en juego. En 1948, once a\u00f1os despu\u00e9sde que se publicara El testamento, Andr\u00e9 Gid\u00e9, granadmirador del novelista belga, le escrib\u00eda sorprendido: \u00abEs un libro notable ymuy distinto a los dem\u00e1s. No tiene personaje principal, sino media docena deherederos situados en un mismo plano. Me maravilla que usted haya podido llevareso a buen t\u00e9rmino\u00bb. Nada tiene de extra\u00f1o este comentario, pues Simenonconcibi\u00f3 esta novela, una de las m\u00e1s extensas, como un aut\u00e9ntico desaf\u00edo.Rompiendo con lo que hasta ese momento hab\u00eda sido su norma \u2014centrarse en unsolo personaje\u2014, recre\u00f3 m\u00faltiples historias paralelas para plasmar poco antesde la segunda guerra mundial, la decadencia de cierta burgues\u00eda que estaba apunto de desaparecer.
