Inar Christiansen, un noruego que estudia violoncelo en Nueva York, concibe un ambicioso y arriesgado plan para perseguir y eliminar a los miembros del grupo de SS que mataron a sus padres y a la mayor parte de la poblaci\u00f3n de su ciudad, en Noruega, durante la segunda guerra mundial. De manera especial intenta averiguar el paradero del coronel Hagemann, el s\u00e1dico jefe del campo de concentraci\u00f3n de Linz, responsable de la destrucci\u00f3n de la ciudad. Pero el \u00fanico modo de encontrar a Hagemann es localizar a Esther Rosensaft, la hermosa y enigm\u00e1tica jud\u00eda internada en dicho campo que fue amante del coronel. Tras las huellas de la chica jud\u00eda, identificable por el tatuaje que se le hizo en el campo de concentraci\u00f3n, Christiansen llega a Viena y recorre otras ciudades y lugares en busca de m\u00e1s datos sobre los nazis.
