\u00abHe escrito este relato \u2014dice Neruda en el pr\u00f3logo\u2014 a petici\u00f3n de mi editor. No me interesa relatar cosa alguna. Yo tengo siempre predilecciones por las grandes ideas, y aunque la literatura se me ofrece con grandes vacilaciones y dudas, prefiero no hacer nada a escribir bailables o diversiones\u00bb.Siempre asustadizo para la prosa, Neruda entrega los originales de este libro a petici\u00f3n de su editor, un poco temeroso de los resultados tangibles, como lo estuvo G\u00f3mez Carrillo con aquel volumen de Par\u00eds, que el editor, al solicit\u00e1rselo, bautiz\u00f3 con el nombre bastante comercial de El modernismo. Esta vez no hubo bautizo de t\u00edtulo, pero s\u00ed de subt\u00edtulo. Debajo de El habitante y su esperanza se puso esta palabra: Novela. Claro que no lo era. Se trataba de una serie de close-ups estupendamente vestidos. Puede cada relato separarse y hacer unidad. Se relatan las conmociones psicol\u00f3gicas del interior chileno, ese interior siempre a la orilla del mar, que forma el coro ante la tragedia de la acci\u00f3n. Lo que se puede aprehender, como suceso l\u00f3gico deliberadamente enmara\u00f1ado, es la pasi\u00f3n. Se cuenta el amor, se va a la c\u00e1rcel por robar ganado, se huye en la noche, se derraman encendidos mon\u00f3logos y se siente la inminencia de una fatalidad pantanosa y fosforescente, en donde el mar \u00abro\u00eddo por el color del tiempo y la asistencia de la soledad\u00bb aprisiona la voluntad de los hombres. Sucede el crimen, y parece que no es posible escapar. El personaje confiesa: \u00abVoy a decir con sinceridad mi caso; lo he explicado con claridad porque yo mismo no lo comprendo. Todo sucede dentro de uno con movimientos y colores confusos, sin distinguirse. Mi \u00fanica idea ha sido vengarme\u00bb. Aqu\u00ed est\u00e1 la clave. La confusi\u00f3n nace de la identificaci\u00f3n que se establece con el clima de una vegetaci\u00f3n apasionada. La venganza \u2014huir, escapar de aquella red en el mundo\u2014 es la soluci\u00f3n. El hombre es el habitante, el actor y asistente de la propia cat\u00e1strofe, y la esperanza es el nuevo d\u00eda, la extirpaci\u00f3n de una inmovilidad, el sacudimiento de una postraci\u00f3n negativa. No hay que pedirle m\u00e1s al libro. Lo ha dicho todo en pocas, intensas p\u00e1ginas. La intimidad descriptiva del mar alcanza en este relato una sabidur\u00eda que no proviene m\u00e1s que del contacto y la formaci\u00f3n en sus imperios. La mujer se abraza con la furia de la lucha contra los l\u00edmites. Todo parece lleno de una vasta articulaci\u00f3n escamosa. \u00abAy de m\u00ed, ay del hombre que puede quedarse solo con sus fantasmas\u00bb, solloza el actor ante el mar implacable. Pero se sacude y logra vencer a los monstruos. Se pregunta d\u00f3nde estuvo, que fue lo qu\u00e9 pas\u00f3, mientras el alba \u00absaca llorando los ojos del agua\u00bb Este es el habitante y esta su esperanza.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
