Ahora, que se ha quedado viuda, ve con resignaci\u00f3n que las ocasiones de volver a casarse se desvanecen; en su lugar, pone todo su empe\u00f1o en encontrar para su hija Lily, de diecis\u00e9is a\u00f1os, un buen marido que las saque de su precaria situaci\u00f3n. Entretanto, Lily es deseada y perseguida por varios hombres: Jethro, el cu\u00f1ado de su madre; Perry, el hijo adolescente de unos vecinos; Claude, un empleado de banco. De oponerse a las ambiciones de Molly se encargar\u00e1n los representantes de la \u00abbuena\u00bb sociedad del pueblo, siempre dispuestos a excluir de la misma a las personas que no se adaptan a sus convenciones.Esta es la primera novela que Erskine Caldwell escribi\u00f3 con una mujer como protagonista absoluta, y el resultado es plenamente satisfactorio. Con un tono de aparente comedia, los episodios c\u00f3micos, casi vodevilescos, se alternan con otros m\u00e1s dram\u00e1ticos. En La segura mano de Dios no falta cr\u00edtica social, aqu\u00ed centrada no en el racismo como es habitual en otras obras suyas, sino en la discriminaci\u00f3n generada por la diferencia de clases entre los blancos.
