Las 44 cartas conservadas en su Epistolario (32 escritas por Braulio, las otras a \u00e9l dirigidas) nos muestran la relaci\u00f3n con su maestro Isidoro de Sevilla (con interesantes referencias sobre la confecci\u00f3n de las Etimolog\u00edas, y su intervenci\u00f3n en ella), Eugenio de Toledo, su tambi\u00e9n disc\u00edpulo y sucesor en la di\u00f3cesis Taj\u00f3n, Fructuoso de Braga, el papa Honorio, y los reyes Chindasvinto y Recesvinto\u2026 Ahora bien, \u00abla fama de Braulio actualmente est\u00e1 cimentada en sus cartas; es una fama reciente y limitada al mundo de los eruditos. Durante muchos siglos fue mucho m\u00e1s conocido por su Vida de San Emiliano. \u00c9l mismo confiaba en que esta obra pudiera salvarle de ser castigado en el otro mundo: Hoc opus, escribe citando a Juvenco, en el prefacio de la Vida, hoc etenim forsan me subtrahet igni. En el a\u00f1o 574, unos diez a\u00f1os antes del nacimiento de Braulio, muri\u00f3 en la regi\u00f3n monta\u00f1osa de Castilla la Vieja, en la regi\u00f3n de la Rioja, el santo ermita\u00f1o cuya vida nos es conocida tan s\u00f3lo gracias a la biograf\u00eda de Braulio.\u00bb (C. Su vida y sus obras.) \u00abLa Espa\u00f1a visigoda es una materia hist\u00f3rica fascinante, pero al mismo tiempo frustrante para el historiador. Por un lado, los hispanovisigodos nos han dejado un amplio elenco documental en sus leyes y en los c\u00e1nones conciliares eclesi\u00e1sticos pero, por otro lado, el tipo de material narrativo y diplom\u00e1tico que nos ayudar\u00eda a los historiadores para comprender c\u00f3mo la ley y la legislaci\u00f3n conciliar eran puestas en pr\u00e1ctica es muy escaso. En particular, para la Espa\u00f1a del siglo VII no abunda la evidencia documental, y precisamente esto es muy frustrante, por cuanto s\u00ed disponemos de indicios seg\u00fan los cuales en esa \u00e9poca el sistema hispanovisigodo disfrutaba de una enjundiosa situaci\u00f3n social, cultural y religiosa. Lo que nos gustar\u00eda conocer, sobre todo, es c\u00f3mo ese sistema operaba en el nivel local y c\u00f3mo interactu\u00f3 con las \u00e9lites locales, puesto que todo ello podr\u00eda contarnos, en efecto, c\u00f3mo era en realidad la Espa\u00f1a visigoda. Lo que s\u00ed tenemos del siglo VII, sin embargo, es un breve elenco de textos hagiogr\u00e1ficos, consistente en cinco obras principales. En las manos de un interrogador h\u00e1bil este material puede dar respuesta al menos a alguna de nuestras preguntas sobre la naturaleza del mundo que lo produjo.
