Sin embargo, nada sab\u00eda Marie de Gourney sobre esta cofrad\u00eda cuando se vio obligada a abandonar su casa en el Franco Condado para viajar en busca de su padre, que se hab\u00eda unido a los Tercios Viejos espa\u00f1oles con la esperanza de llegar hasta Sevilla y pasar al Nuevo Mundo. Nada sab\u00eda tampoco de las sibilas la novicia conocida como la Beata de los Huevos que en la Pradera de San Isidro de Madrid, vestida con la t\u00fanica de la infamia conocida como sambenito, aguardaba encerrada en una jaula de madera a morir en la hoguera quemada por hereje en el auto de fe organizado por la Santa Inquisici\u00f3n. Y mucho menos a\u00fan sab\u00eda de las sibilas la ni\u00f1a negra membrilla que, medio desnuda y encadenada, esperaba comprador sentada en las gradas de la catedral de Sevilla: qu\u00e9 iba a saber si acabada de llegar en un barco que la hab\u00eda arrancado de la Negrer\u00eda y ya padec\u00eda mal de sentimiento, qu\u00e9 iba a saber si era negra bozal y no comprend\u00eda lo que suced\u00eda a su alrededor. Esta novela comienza en el Franco Condado y termina en la Sevilla de la Carrera de Indias, entrelazando vidas y aventuras para perfilar un retablo social del enorme Imperio espa\u00f1ol de principios del siglo XVII. Tiene algo de bizantina, algo de libro de caballer\u00eda y varias historias de amor, pero es mucho m\u00e1s.
