Mientras Martha Stroup se mata a trabajar lavando la ropa de sus vecinos, Morris Stroup idear\u00e1 todo tipo de absurdas invenciones para vivir sin dar golpe, provocando multitud de situaciones c\u00f3micas en las que los principales perjudicados resultar\u00e1n ser su propia esposa y el pobre Handsome Brown.Aunque revestidas de humor y ligereza, las catorce historias que componen esta fragmentaria novela inici\u00e1tica, narradas con deliciosa sencillez e inocencia por el peque\u00f1o William, dejan entrever el fondo de amarga denuncia del racismo y la ignorancia del sur profundo, al igual que ocurre en otras grandes obras de Caldwell, como [url=&#8217;https:\/\/www.epublibre.org\/libro\/detalle\/7422&#8242;]El camino del tabaco[\/url], [url=&#8217;https:\/\/www.epublibre.org\/libro\/detalle\/26915&#8242;]La parcela de Dios[\/url] o Tumulto en julio.
