Clasificada dentro del grupo de sus novelas de tesis, fue la \u00faltima publicada de ese ciclo, tras Do\u00f1a Perfecta (1876), Gloria (1876-77) y Marianela (1878). Obra de transici\u00f3n, bajo el soporte argumental de un tri\u00e1ngulo amoroso y apasionado entre dos mujeres y un hombre, el escritor, habiendo madurado su estudio de la sociedad, dispara en ella sus \u00faltimas salvas de tesis e ideolog\u00eda, dispuesto a contar la realidad en su desnudez material.Le\u00f3n Roch representa al mundo de la ciencia, de la actividad pr\u00e1ctica y del laicismo, mientras que su mujer, Mar\u00eda Egipc\u00edaca, ejemplifica el tradicionalismo conservador, el ocio contemplativo y el cultivo de la exterioridad religiosa. Si bien la novela se propone en gran medida mostrar las consecuencias dram\u00e1ticas de los conflictos de creencias, los personajes logran, sin embargo, independizarse en ella de la f\u00e1bula moral y pedag\u00f3gica para cuyos prop\u00f3sitos hab\u00edan sido creados.Se escribe en los umbrales de la nueva manera galdosiana. Esta obra anticipa la complejidad estil\u00edstica, densidad conceptual y verosimilitudes afines al renacimiento de la narrativa espa\u00f1ola decimon\u00f3nica. La cr\u00edtica ha se\u00f1alado sus deudas textuales con el racionalismo arm\u00f3nico de la filosof\u00eda krausista. Tambi\u00e9n parece evidente el prop\u00f3sito del autor de prestigiar ciertos valores burgueses encarnados en el protagonista en detrimento de corruptos h\u00e1bitos aristocr\u00e1ticos. La novela elabora multiplicidad de discursos literarios, religiosos, est\u00e9ticos y sociopol\u00edticos unificados por su aspiraci\u00f3n regeneradora y simult\u00e1neamente par\u00f3dica, que supusieron el desencuentro de Gald\u00f3s con la opini\u00f3n p\u00fablica de su \u00e9poca.
