Gloria consagr\u00f3 a Gald\u00f3s convirti\u00e9ndolo, a juicio de sus contempor\u00e1neos, en el mejor novelista de su generaci\u00f3n y en el primero de los novelistas espa\u00f1oles de su tiempo. Adscrita al g\u00e9nero de la novela ideol\u00f3gica, m\u00e1s tarde conocida como novela de tesis, la concepci\u00f3n, escritura y publicaci\u00f3n de Gloria coincidieron con importantes episodios de la historia nacional. Pero Gloria es, ante todo, una obra inolvidable. Como novedad esencial, en esta obra Gald\u00f3s ofrece el primer ejemplo en su novel\u00edstica de una mujer como protagonista, una mujer que nada tiene que ver con la hero\u00edna sumisa y d\u00f3cil del follet\u00edn, sino un personaje con una personalidad vigorosa que defiende su inteligencia y su voluntad en un mundo antag\u00f3nicoNarra la historia de una joven burguesa que habita en una peque\u00f1a villa c\u00e1ntabra. Inteligente aunque sumisa, la muchacha es \u00e1gil de pensamiento y le gusta poner en duda lo que la sociedad le muestra como incontrovertible; su padre, acomodado terrateniente, y su t\u00edo, obispo muy respetado, no ven peligro alguno en este conato de libertad intelectual que Gloria se permite. Sin embargo, la vida de todos ellos dar\u00e1 un vuelco cuando rescaten del mar a un hombre extranjero, nativo de Hamburgo, que no profesa la religi\u00f3n cat\u00f3lica y que se enamora de la protagonista, siendo r\u00e1pidamente correspondido.
