En efecto, los seis cuentosest\u00e1n escritos por el narrador de la novela corta que cierra y da t\u00edtulo a todoel volumen, aunque este narrador no hace nunca menci\u00f3n de su obra, el lectorpercibe a partir de su relato, a partir de ciertos detalles, acontecimientos eim\u00e1genes que iban apareciendo en los cuentos y que retoma la narraci\u00f3n final,la estrecha vinculaci\u00f3n que une todos los textos. Por otro lado, se trata de unlibro de fuerte carga autobiogr\u00e1fica, aunque no en el sentido convencional, enel que E. L. Doctorow se enfrenta con valent\u00eda a su propia situaci\u00f3n deescritor de gran \u00e9xito (recu\u00e9rdese su best-seller mundial Ragtime) y se pregunta, a sus cincuenta a\u00f1os, qu\u00e9 ha hecho de suvida. Aparentemente tiene todo lo que podr\u00eda desear: una esposa inteligente, ungran \u00e9xito profesional, dinero. Y, sin embargo, turbado por la pregunta acercade su propia condici\u00f3n, terminar\u00e1 errando sin rumbo fijo por las peores callesde Nueva York. \u00abEn su libro m\u00e1s sutil, Doctorowexplora las heridas abiertas del coraz\u00f3n con la m\u00e1s extrema econom\u00eda y controlde medios\u00bb.
