Ve\u00eda, como algo inexorable, la participaci\u00f3n en la vida p\u00fablica de masas tumultuosas, el disturbio y la transformaci\u00f3n de la vida espa\u00f1ola, para bien o para mal, rebasando programas y figuras del d\u00eda. Comenzar\u00e1 la acci\u00f3n en un molino de Bera, que se puede identificar en los planos del t\u00e9rmino. No cabe identificar en cambio a Ferm\u00edn Acha.La familia de Errotacho es tambi\u00e9n un compuesto de realidades observadas. Un personaje est\u00e1 tomado de aqu\u00ed, otros de all\u00e1. Todos de cerca de la vecindad de la casa de Baroja, de \u00abItzea\u00bb. Pero, de repente, el relato cobra m\u00e1s amplitud, los comentarios tienen el vuelo del pensamiento del autor. De una acci\u00f3n de contrabandistas, en el libro segundo pasa a una acci\u00f3n hist\u00f3rica conocida. La triste entrada de los sindicalistas en Bera, el a\u00f1o 1924, en oto\u00f1o.
