Despu\u00e9s de los dos vol\u00famenes anteriores \u2014El origen y El s\u00f3tano\u2014, este libro es la tercera parte de los recuerdos de juventud de Thomas Bernhard. Nos cuenta la afecci\u00f3n pulmonar contra\u00edda por aquel joven de dieciocho a\u00f1os no cumplidos, que le oblig\u00f3 a renunciar a su aprendizaje del comercio e interrumpir sus estudios musicales. El relato abarca, cronol\u00f3gicamente, los primeros meses de 1949, una \u00e9poca que Bernhard vivi\u00f3 en circunstancias personales y familiares ca\u00f3ticas. El estallido de la enfermedad le arranc\u00f3 de forma l\u00f3gica y, sin embargo, brutal en todos los aspectos, del entorno que hasta entonces le hab\u00eda sido natural, oblig\u00e1ndole a un aislamiento en el que tuvo que convivir con la enfermedad y, como consecuencia, exclusivamente con la enfermedad y la muerte.
