En este ensayo Norbert Elias concibe el tiempo como un fen\u00f3meno que depende de organizaciones sociales y se da a la tarea de reconstruir su historia e identificar los momentos claves que han cambiado nuestra forma de percibirlo. Mediante la observaci\u00f3n antropol\u00f3gica de las comunidades &#8216;primitivas&#8217;, Elias eval\u00faa la experiencia del tiempo desde el fen\u00f3meno b\u00e1sico que nos lleva del d\u00eda a la noche y del fr\u00edo al calor, hasta la exacta sucesi\u00f3n de segundos que rige nuestros d\u00edas.Elias insiste en que el tiempo no pertenece al mundo natural sino que forma parte de una &#8216;quinta dimensi\u00f3n&#8217;: la social. Para \u00e9l, el tiempo no solo es un s\u00edmbolo humano, una abstracci\u00f3n que nos permite medir los cambios a nuestro alrededor, sino tambi\u00e9n -y sobre todo- una herramienta para organizar las sociedades. El ensayo de Norbert Elias Sobre el tiempo ocupa un lugar destacado entre sus estudios sociol\u00f3gicos, por cuanto formula y desarrolla aqu\u00ed algunas de sus principales opiniones sobre un tema central de nuestra tradici\u00f3n cultural. De modo particular pretende demostrar que lo que llamamos tiempo no es ni un dato a priori de la naturaleza humana (Kant), ni una propiedad inmanente de la naturaleza no-humana, sino m\u00e1s bien el resultado de una s\u00edntesis humana que solo puede entender quien la refiera a ciertos procesos sociales.La experiencia del tiempo, tal como se vive hoy en d\u00eda, se diferencia de estadios m\u00e1s primitivos del desarrollo de las sociedades por la continuidad. Mientras que las sociedades primeras delimitaban el tiempo de acuerdo con sus necesidades, siguiendo ciertos momentos y ocasiones, las actuales disponen de una ret\u00edcula rigurosamente subdividida en unidades temporales, trabadas entre s\u00ed: las horas, los d\u00edas, los meses, los a\u00f1os, etc. Dicha ret\u00edcula domina toda su vida.
