Sin embargo, ya desde el siglo XVIII, y sobre todo en el XX con las versiones Disney, el cuento ha sufrido tal cantidad de manipulaciones y arreglos que se ha desvirtuado por completo su sentido y, lo que es peor, se ha desvanecido su car\u00e1cter de antecedente del realismo m\u00e1gico que sin duda tiene.En su excelente pr\u00f3logo, Khawam no s\u00f3lo pone los puntos sobre las \u00edes en cuanto a la historia del texto, sino que lleva a cabo una brillant\u00edsima interpretaci\u00f3n de la importancia que tiene \u00abEl libro de Aladino\u00bb en la historia de la literatura.Cuando Ren\u00e9 R. Khawam public\u00f3 la que hoy conocemos como la edici\u00f3n definitiva y can\u00f3nica de Las mil y una noches, algunos lectores se sintieron decepcionados al descubrir que no pertenec\u00edan a este libro algunos de los relatos tradicionalmente asociados a \u00e9l, como, por ejemplo, el de Aladino. Como explica Khawam en la introducci\u00f3n a El libro de Aladino, lo que Antoine Galland bautiz\u00f3 como Historia de Aladino y su l\u00e1mpara maravillosa fue incorporado a Las mil y una noches muy tard\u00edamente, despu\u00e9s de que en mayo de 1709 el ilustre orientalista oyera una versi\u00f3n del relato en boca del narrador sirio Hanna Diap.Por ello, Khawam decidi\u00f3 que, como hiciera con Las mil y una noches, hab\u00eda que remontarse a las fuentes originales, que no pod\u00edan ser unas ediciones \u00e1rabes que edulcoraban los relatos, sino s\u00f3lo las diversas copias manuscritas existentes.
