Los \u00faltimos diez a\u00f1os de su vida vivi\u00f3 condenado al silencio y al olvido; parec\u00eda que su nombre se hubiera borrado de la literatura. Hoy, Bulg\u00e1kov se encuentra en un nivel parecido al de Turgu\u00e9niev, Tolst\u00f3i o Ch\u00e9jov.Los relatos reunidos en este volumen pertenecen al ciclo Notas de un m\u00e9dico joven. Todos est\u00e1n basados en experiencias reales del propio Bulg\u00e1kov, que durante a\u00f1os ejerci\u00f3 como m\u00e9dico rural en la provincia de Smolensk. Morfina, el relato con el que culmina este ciclo, tambi\u00e9n naci\u00f3 a partir de un hecho real: la adicci\u00f3n del autor a la morfina, con la que logr\u00f3 romper hacia 1919. A pesar de que los relatos se remontan a los a\u00f1os 1916-1917, en ninguno hay indicios del paso de la revoluci\u00f3n por las aldeas y el campo. Mija\u00edl Bulg\u00e1kov es aqu\u00ed un m\u00e9dico joven que duda de sus conocimientos y de su habilidad, pero que demuestra estar lleno de energ\u00eda para luchar en contra de la inercia y la incultura. Pero el lector no se encuentra frente a un hombre culto que se hunde en las rusas Tinieblas egipcias, sino ante un h\u00e9roe que encaja perfectamente en el engranaje de la vida social rusa de aquella \u00e9poca.
