Para narrar las Guerras M\u00e9dicas que enfrentaron a griegos y persas en el siglo V a.C., relatando desde el pasado lejano al pr\u00f3ximo y abarcando todo el mundo conocido en su \u00e9poca (tal es el contenido de su Historia), no se inspir\u00f3 en los heroicos modelos \u00e9picos de Homero, ni en los relatos idealizadores con los que en su tiempo se embellec\u00eda la vida de personajes poderosos (genealog\u00edas) y la fundaci\u00f3n de ciudades (relatos fundacionales), y fue mucho m\u00e1s all\u00e1 que los log\u00f3grafos (sus precursores inmediatos en la narraci\u00f3n de hechos hist\u00f3ricos) y los g\u00e9neros geogr\u00e1ficos de los periplos y las descripciones de la tierra. Su empe\u00f1o consisti\u00f3 en preservar del olvido las gestas humanas, y en determinar la responsabilidad moral (a menudo la causa de los males). Con \u00e9l la \u00e9poca m\u00edtica deja de considerarse historia y se convierte en prehistoria de los griegos. Y a partir de \u00e9l ser\u00e1 el ser humano, individual o colectivamente, con sus grandezas y miserias, el centro de ese nuevo g\u00e9nero literario que conocemos como historiograf\u00eda.En el \u00abProemio\u00bb, Her\u00f3doto declara su intenci\u00f3n de salvar del olvido las haza\u00f1as de las generaciones que le precedieron, de investigar las causas de las Guerras M\u00e9dicas centr\u00e1ndose en lo humano y en lo admirable realizado tanto por b\u00e1rbaros como por griegos. En el libro primero se narra el pasado remoto de los persas: Creso, primer agresor en \u00e9poca hist\u00f3rica contra los griegos de Asia, y su derrota frente a Ciro, fundador del imperio persa. Este primer libro describe el crecimiento del imperio, y se centra fundamentalmente, adem\u00e1s de en los persas, en lidios, babilonios y el pueblo n\u00f3mada de los mas\u00e1getas, todos ellos v\u00edctimas del irreprimible af\u00e1n expansionista.
