Pese a las cr\u00edticas que la han rodeado y el apasionamiento que envuelve todo lo relacionado con Crist\u00f3bal Col\u00f3n o sus adversarios, lo cierto es que sigue siendo una valiosa fuente de conocimiento, tanto para la historia de los descubrimientos colombinos como para los primeros asentamientos espa\u00f1oles en el Nuevo Mundo. Para su elaboraci\u00f3n, el hijo menor del Almirante utiliz\u00f3 material de primera mano procedente del descubridor y de otros protagonistas de aquella primera hora americana. Algunos documentos, hoy perdidos, nos han llegado a trav\u00e9s de esta obra como, por ejemplo, la famosa Relaci\u00f3n del ermita\u00f1o fray Ram\u00f3n Pane, aut\u00e9ntico tesoro sobre la mitolog\u00eda, creencias y costumbres de la poblaci\u00f3n ind\u00edgena antillana. La Historia del Almirante fue escrita con el objetivo de enaltecer la figura y obra del descubridor de Am\u00e9rica. En tal sentido, alcanza relieve excepcional todo lo relativo a viajes y descubrimientos colombinos. Es ah\u00ed donde la pluma hernandina brilla m\u00e1s y mejor. Entreteje unos relatos \u2014sobre todo el del cuarto viaje\u2014 bastante completos, aunque olvide transmitirnos ciertos comportamientos paternos dudosos y criticables. Hernando tuvo en todo momento los diarios de a bordo y relaciones de su padre, aportaci\u00f3n que, debidamente expurgada, siempre deber\u00e1 reconocer el historiador. Ni qu\u00e9 decir tiene que cualquier lector que se acerque a esta obra deber\u00e1 hacerlo con enorme cautela y sentido cr\u00edtico.
