Mediante ejemplos cuidadosamente seleccionados, el autor demuestra en este libro que no hay vida sin comunicaci\u00f3n, y que \u00e9sta no se limita a las manifestaciones sonoras: el barrenillo (un insecto cole\u00f3ptero), por ejemplo, se sirve de sustancias olorosas, determinados peces utilizan se\u00f1ales luminosas, las abejas recurren a la danza&#8230; incluso los organismos unicelulares se comunican tambi\u00e9n entre s\u00ed. En este libro, H. Schmid explica c\u00f3mo se aprovechan las posibilidades existentes, qu\u00e9 requisitos han de cumplirse para que los animales puedan emitir, recibir y elaborar se\u00f1ales y qu\u00e9 papel desempe\u00f1a la comunicaci\u00f3n en su vida social y desarrollo posterior. Heribert Schmid naci\u00f3 en Kohlberg (Alemania) en 1927 y estudi\u00f3 biolog\u00eda, qu\u00edmica y geolog\u00eda en Tubinga.
