Gustaremos la vida de la edad de oro si aprendemos a saborear sin esfuerzo las obras de Dem\u00e9ter.\u00bb As\u00ed, dice el autor, elogiaba el molino de agua un poeta griego de la antig\u00fcedad. Pero a\u00fan estaba distante el d\u00eda en que una transformaci\u00f3n profunda del trabajo y de las relaciones sociales habr\u00eda de promover la aplicaci\u00f3n en gran escala a la industria del molino del agua y de las nuevas t\u00e9cnicas. Entre tanto, \u00abacostumbrados desde muchos siglos atr\u00e1s a emplear la energ\u00eda humana, las antiguas no solamente no buscaron un cambio tan brusco en sus tradiciones econ\u00f3micas, sociales, pol\u00edticas y religiosas, sino que la temieron\u00bb. De este y otros ejemplos mencionados en el libro se desprende la gran distancia que existe entre la semilla intelectual de un invento y la aplicaci\u00f3n sistem\u00e1tica y colectiva que, basada en t\u00e9cnicas de probada eficacia, la convierte en una instituci\u00f3n social. Pierre Ducass\u00e9, profesor de filosof\u00eda de la Facultad de Letras de la Universidad de Besancon, encargado de la ense\u00f1anza en el Conservatorio Nacional de Artes y Oficios, se ocupa en este libro de la historia de las t\u00e9cnicas (con especial consideraci\u00f3n de la Revoluci\u00f3n Industrial) y de sus relaciones con el desarrollo de la industria, de las relaciones sociales y del conocimiento. Un tema tan vasto y complejo, tratado en forma \u00e1gil e instructiva, hace de \u00e9ste un libro que a pocos podr\u00e1 dejar de interesar vivamente.
