Un ni\u00f1o cuyo destino es un orfanato. Durante unas horas, tan dram\u00e1ticas como desesperadas, Bob se pregunta qu\u00e9 es lo que debe hacer. Decir la verdad a su mujer y poner as\u00ed en peligro la estabilidad de su matrimonio y la felicidad de sus hijas o dejar que aquel ni\u00f1o lejano pague por unas culpas que no son suyas. Por fin decide arrastrar el asunto con el mayor valor posible y contarlo todo a su esposa. La primera reacci\u00f3n de ella es, justificadamente, violenta, sin embargo despu\u00e9s de pensarlo con m\u00e1s calma ambos deciden que la mejor soluci\u00f3n es que el ni\u00f1o venga a pasar una temporada con ellos. Eso s\u00ed, sin decirle que Bob es su padre, sino tan solo un viejo amigo de su desaparecida madre. Enga\u00f1ado el ni\u00f1o y tambi\u00e9n las hijas del matrimonio, se empieza a establecer entre todos ellos unas relaciones que, si al principio resultan un poco tensas, acabar\u00e1n siendo enormemente cordiales. Hasta que un d\u00eda, se revela la verdad. Erich Segal no solamente nos cuenta en esta novela la historia de un drama familiar, sino que nos muestra tambi\u00e9n la hipocres\u00eda, el ego\u00edsmo y la mezquindad de una sociedad en la que los hechos reales, las verdades palpables, siempre tienen que estar recubiertas con un velo de mentira y de falsa felicidad. Erich Segal alcanz\u00f3 renombre mundial con su novela Love Story, cuya adaptaci\u00f3n cinematogr\u00e1fica ha constituido uno de los grandes \u00e9xitos de estos \u00faltimos a\u00f1os.
