Se trata de una gran obra sin ser necesariamente vasta. Su logro radica en la capacidad y el talento de su autora para condensar en poco m\u00e1s de cien p\u00e1ginas la complejidad tanto psicol\u00f3gica del personaje como la de la realidad en la que se desenvuelve. Elizabeth, la protagonista y narradora del libro en primera persona, es una mujer responsable y ap\u00e1tica al mismo tiempo. Su \u00fanico hijo, llamado Bobo, vivi\u00f3 internado desde peque\u00f1o en un colegio para hijos de familias distinguidas \u2014colegio con un gran jard\u00edn pero en el fondo s\u00f3rdido. El marido de Elizabeth termin\u00f3 suicid\u00e1ndose y al recibir el telegrama que le comunica su muerte, Elizabeth empieza a analizar sus relaciones con Max, su esposo, como suele ocurrir siempre ante la muerte de alguien que ha ocupado cierto lugar en nuestra vida propia. Ella recorre en su memoria las escenas de su vida con su ex esposo difunto. Gracias a esta rememoraci\u00f3n, el lector se hace una idea de qui\u00e9n era Max, cuyo suicidio no carece de motivos. Entre otros, la indiferencia con la que siempre fue tratado por sus padres y, luego, por su mujer. Este abandono y el conflicto racial de su pa\u00eds, le causaron una gran depresi\u00f3n. \u00abLa libertad era un sue\u00f1o m\u00e1s\u00bb, dice la autora, quien siempre se ha considerado, primero que nada, escritora. As\u00ed lo manifiesta con palabras tajantes: \u00abCreo que mi prop\u00f3sito en la vida no ha cambiado jam\u00e1s, el ser una escritora\u00bb.
