Muchos a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s, el editor Claudio Valbuena recibe de manos de Julia Gadea el diario del capit\u00e1n Alonso Zald\u00edvar, responsable de la cruenta represalia de julio de 1936 y oscuramente relacionado con la madre de Julia, Paulina Sarabia, que ha guardado el secreto de lo ocurrido hasta su muerte. Con el prop\u00f3sito de recoger material para la edici\u00f3n del manuscrito, Claudio y Julia viajan a Marruecos, descubren el verdadero origen de ella y dejan abierta, pese a la diferencia de edad, una historia de amor entre ambos. Pero tras la exitosa publicaci\u00f3n del diario, donde se da cuenta de la participaci\u00f3n de Zald\u00edvar en sangrientos episodios del pasado, Julia abandona a su amante y desaparece misteriosamente. Unos versos de Walt Whitman, colocados en el epitafio de la tumba del capit\u00e1n, revelar\u00e1n a Claudio, a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s, el enigma de Julia.El sue\u00f1o de Whitman es la historia de una b\u00fasqueda, la que emprende una mujer que necesita reconstruir su propia vida, desenterrar y enterrar a los muertos de su pasado, pero tambi\u00e9n es la b\u00fasqueda de la memoria colectiva, la de una parte de la historia de Espa\u00f1a que se mantuvo oculta durante m\u00e1s de medio siglo. El Premio de la Cr\u00edtica Valenciana en el apartado de narrativa se otorga a la mejor novela, a juicio del Jurado, publicado por autor valenciano durante el a\u00f1o 2010.
