Es un bello canto l\u00edrico, \u00e9pico, a la gesta de Crist\u00f3bal Col\u00f3n. Ciro Bayo escribi\u00f3 esta obra y El vellocino de oro, sobre la expedici\u00f3n de Gonzalo Pizarro al pa\u00eds de Eldorado, mientras se encontraba en la selva amaz\u00f3nica. Desgraciadamente, el segundo manuscrito se perdi\u00f3. Seg\u00fan comenta el autor: \u00abGuardaba los dos manuscritos como oro en pa\u00f1o, no por lo que en si val\u00edan, sino por el trabajo que me cost\u00f3 escribirlos. Hasta que cierta noche, los b\u00e1rbaros \u2014como all\u00ed llaman \u00e1 los indios salvajes\u2014 cayeron de improviso en la barraca, la incendiaron, y aunque nuestros rifles les pusieron en fuga, el da\u00f1o estaba hecho y lo quemado, quemado. Perd\u00ed mi modesto equipaje y con \u00e9l mis mamotretos. S\u00f3lo se salv\u00f3 LA COLOMBIADA, porque un franc\u00e9s, tan buen pendolista como dibujante, empleado en otra barraca del r\u00edo, gustoso de la lectura que antes le hiciera de mi obra, me la pidi\u00f3 para ponerla en limpio \u00e9 ilustrarla.
