En uno de esos sofocantes ambientes provincianos que sirven de indeciso campo de batalla entre el Bien y el Mal, escenarios predilectos de su narrativa, Mauriac presenta aqu\u00ed un joven matrimonio en discordia, en cuya vida van a mezclarse otros personajes no menos torturados que ellos. El tema del odio que no acaba de manifestarse, quiz\u00e1 como una cara oculta y parad\u00f3jica del amor, el tema del sacrificio, del que se ofrece como v\u00edctima expiatoria de los dem\u00e1s, la p\u00e9rdida de la fe, que tambi\u00e9n se disimula para evitar un esc\u00e1ndalo p\u00fablico, y el farise\u00edsmo imperante en esa digna burgues\u00eda bordelesa, componen un dram\u00e1tico cuadro que se impregna de sentido religioso, pero que evita siempre toda abstracci\u00f3n y todo intento de apolog\u00e9tica.
