Le sigue una explicaci\u00f3n clara de las principales formas musicales: la fuga, la variaci\u00f3n, la sonata, la sinfon\u00eda, el poema sinf\u00f3nico, la \u00f3pera y la danza.El autor concluye con una consideraci\u00f3n ilustrativa del papel desempe\u00f1ado por los actores en la comprensi\u00f3n del auditorio. Los cap\u00edtulos dedicados a la \u00f3pera, el drama musical, la m\u00fasica contempor\u00e1nea y la m\u00fasica para obras cinematogr\u00e1ficas demuestran la universalidad de los principios de la apreciaci\u00f3n musical, sin l\u00edmites de g\u00e9nero ni de tiempo.Copland subraya la continuidad fundamental del desarrollo de la m\u00fasica desde la antigua hasta la nueva, y su exposici\u00f3n prepara al lector para que entienda la m\u00fasica contempor\u00e1nea en el mismo grado que la cl\u00e1sica.
