El primero sosten\u00eda la primac\u00eda de la inteligencia, la prudencia y la memoria, como componente de la vida buena, el segundo sosten\u00eda la mayor importancia del placer, el gozo y el disfrute.No bien Protarco reemplaza a Filebo como interlocutor de S\u00f3crates, \u00e9ste admite que en realidad la vida buena no puede prescindir ni del placer ni de la inteligencia, por lo que en realidad se le debe otorgar el primer puesto en la consideraci\u00f3n a una vida mixta: nadie desear\u00eda una vida de pensamiento sin placer, y tampoco es admisible una vida puramente placentera sin facultades intelectuales. Queda por resolver cu\u00e1l elemento de los ya considerados va a obtener el segundo premio. Para ello S\u00f3crates despliega un an\u00e1lisis en el que distingue cuatro clases: lo ilimitado, el l\u00edmite, la mezcla de ambos, y la causa de la mezcla. La tarea consiste en determinar a cuales de estas clases pertenecen el placer y la inteligencia. El di\u00e1logo avanza analizando los distintos tipos de placeres en puros e impuros, verdaderos y falsos; y los conocimientos en t\u00e9cnicos, culturales, y la dial\u00e9ctica, cuyo objeto es lo verdaderamente real.
