Lo ocurrido comienza en 1932 y transcurrir\u00e1 en los doce a\u00f1os siguientes, durante los cuales el mundo ser\u00e1 devastado como un jard\u00edn invadido por jabal\u00edes.El granjero Alfons Materna acaba de perder a su hijo, captado por los SA, grupos de asalto del partido nazi, en unas maniobras paramilitares clandestinas. Desde ese momento sabe que todo va a cambiar en su vida pero, impert\u00e9rrito, Materna decide hacerle la vida imposible a los jerarcas locales del partido y, por ende, al nazismo. Con algunos aliados y con casi todo el mundo en contra, se empe\u00f1a en una tozuda resistencia a base de tretas, trampas y, sobre todo, el manejo de todas las miserias personales de cada jefe local.Y as\u00ed continuar\u00e1, mientras llega el ascenso y el auge del nazismo o estalla toda una guerra mundial, imp\u00e1vido ante los muchos sacrificios que tendr\u00e1 que hacer, con un objetivo final: poder ver con sus propios ojos el derrumbe de la falacia nazi.Tras \u00e9xitos como la saga del soldado Asch, La noche de los generales o F\u00e1brica de oficiales, Hans Hellmut Kirst public\u00f3 en 1967 Die W\u00f6lfe (Los lobos, originalmente titulada \u201cEl zorro de Maulen\u201d), una novela especialmente original pues es una de sus pocas obras en torno al nazismo y la Segunda Guerra Mundial que no tiene como base la vida militar. Los lobos es una mordaz radiograf\u00eda del nazismo en un peque\u00f1o pueblo alem\u00e1n, desde su espectacular aparici\u00f3n hasta su fat\u00eddico desenlace con medio mundo destruido.
