La novela transcurre entre noviembre de 1932 y el verano de 1933. Gustav Oppermann, escritor, y su hermano Martin, due\u00f1o de un comercio de muebles, van viendo con preocupaci\u00f3n la campa\u00f1a que se va orquestando contra los jud\u00edos. Edgar, otro de los hermanos, m\u00e9dico de reconocido prestigio, empieza a sufrir las discriminaciones en el hospital en el que trabaja. Berthold, hijo de Martin y alumno aventajado, es humillado por profesores y compa\u00f1eros hasta l\u00edmites insospechados. Los nazis comienzan a boicotear los comercios jud\u00edos.El incendio del Reichstag viene a precipitar el imperio de la violencia que se cierne sobre sus cabezas. La campa\u00f1a contra los jud\u00edos pasa de los dichos a los hechos, de la satanizaci\u00f3n a la agresi\u00f3n organizada.
