Escrita a instancias de la princesa Isabel de Bohemia, quien ped\u00eda reiteradamente a su \u00abinstructor\u00bb aclaraciones sobre la relaci\u00f3n en el ser humano entre dos sustancias tan distintas como el alma y el cuerpo, en ella encontramos una serie de reflexiones que profundizan, precisan o rectifican algunas de las tesis que Descartes hab\u00eda sostenido con anterioridad.La obra, elaborada con la intenci\u00f3n de \u00abexplicar las pasiones \u2014en palabras del autor\u2014 no como orador, ni tampoco como fil\u00f3sofo moral, sino solamente como f\u00edsico\u00bb, consta de tres partes, \u00abde las que la primera tratar\u00e1 de las pasiones en general, y en ocasiones de la naturaleza del alma, etc.; la segunda, de las seis pasiones primitivas, y la tercera, de todas las dem\u00e1s\u00bb. De hecho, Descartes inicia su explicaci\u00f3n sobre las pasiones por una descripci\u00f3n de la fisiolog\u00eda humana, para acabarla con una reflexi\u00f3n acerca de la moral, tras dar cuenta de las mismas como resultado de la uni\u00f3n del alma y el cuerpo.
