Por el contrario, en lo que respecta a su fondo social, pesa, desde el primer instante en que se plantea la situaci\u00f3n, como un halo de tragedia que desembocar\u00e1 en la soluci\u00f3n fatal y previsible que viene determinada por la condici\u00f3n acomodaticia y mezquina de las fuerzas vivas del pueblo que es escenario \u00fanico de la novela.Luis Romero se encara con los problemas que surgen en ese pueblo en el momento en que muere un cacique que lo ha tenido dominado largos a\u00f1os. La narraci\u00f3n dura poco m\u00e1s de treinta horas y culmina cuando, terminada la ceremonia del entierro, los hombres pusil\u00e1nimes y ego\u00edstas, esas fuerzas vivas a que hemos aludido, se acercan a rendir pleites\u00eda al nuevo cacique, que tambi\u00e9n los oprimir\u00e1 y explotar\u00e1 a cambio de ejercer sobre ellos una vaga tutela. A trav\u00e9s de los personajes, dibujados con el crudo y certero trazo a que nos tiene acostumbrados Luis Romero, tenemos la impresi\u00f3n de asistir a la disecci\u00f3n de un cuerpo, un cuerpo social que es como una alambrada que cerca y aprieta el destino individual de esos hombres y mujeres.El relato, fuerte, vivo, est\u00e1 resuelto casi enteramente por medio de di\u00e1logos ensamblados en una gran riqueza de situaciones.
