El desencadenante de este angustioso thriller narrado en primera persona llega el d\u00eda en que el director del diario Globe encarga a Philip un reportaje sobre las sectas locales, aprovechando que \u00e9ste est\u00e1 investigando el tema para una novela en la que trabaja. Sus v\u00edvidas pesadillas corren parejas a sus descubrimientos, pesadillas que poco a poco cobran entidad real y pavorosa a medida que elabora el reportaje encargado&#8230; Las sectas est\u00e1n siendo atacadas violentamente por un pir\u00f3mano y Dempster debe enfrentarse a su terror por el fuego. Pero d\u00f3nde empieza el sue\u00f1o y d\u00f3nde acaba la realidad, es lo que el periodista no sabe fijar con exactitud: una serie de secuencias vertiginosas y de gran tensi\u00f3n desembocar\u00e1n en un inesperado desenlace. Robert Bloch, despu\u00e9s de haber visitado otros mundos, alcanzando en sus relatos de ficci\u00f3n sobrenatural las m\u00e1s elevadas alturas c\u00f3smicas del espacio y el tiempo, se sumerge en las profundidades m\u00e1s oscuras de las motivaciones humanas: la avaricia, la lujuria y la violencia, para mostrarnos lo oculto y terrible de nuestro propio mundo, como dijo acertadamente el cr\u00edtico William P.
