En realidad, Georges Simenon vivi\u00f3 entre 1942 y 1944 en aquella ciudad provinciana y cat\u00f3lica en la que, tras una corta temporada en apacible convivencia con su mujer y su amante, los vecinos empezaron a murmurar y tacharle de inmoral. No ser\u00eda la primera y \u00fanica vez que Simenon se inspirara en una vivencia personal para crear circunstancias y personajes de sus novelas.Tony Falcone y Andr\u00e9e Despierre, que se conocen desde la infancia y se hab\u00edan perdido de vista, vuelven a encontrarse, casados ya los dos. De pronto, tard\u00edamente, descubren que se gustan y durante meses se dan cita en la \u00abhabitaci\u00f3n azul\u00bb del H\u00f4tel des Voyageurs. Un d\u00eda en que el marido de Andr\u00e9e est\u00e1 a punto de sorprenderlos, Tony, atemorizado, decide cortar la relaci\u00f3n y se marcha unos d\u00edas de vacaciones fuera de la ciudad con su esposa e hija. Pero Andr\u00e9e, que imaginaba ya una nueva vida al lado de Tony no est\u00e1 dispuesta a \u00e9ste la abandone y empieza a acosarlo con cartas a su antiguo amante. Poco despu\u00e9s, al morir su marido de repente, las cartas de Andr\u00e9e se vuelven m\u00e1s y m\u00e1s apremiantes y comprometedoras.
