Si en aquel primer volumen Edmund Talbot \u2014a bordo de un barco que le llevar\u00e1 hasta Australia, donde ocupar\u00e1 un cargo oficial en el gobierno de la colonia\u2014 escrib\u00eda un diario destinado a impresionar a su padrino y protector, en este nuevo relato reemprender\u00e1 la tarea imponi\u00e9ndose esta vez a s\u00ed mismo como \u00fanico lector y destinatario. Es un Talbot distinto \u2014ensombrecida todav\u00eda su memoria por la tr\u00e1gica muerte de James Colley con que se cerraba la novela anterior\u2014 el que se enfrenta con la primera p\u00e1gina en blanco de su nuevo diario. Nuevas experiencias \u2014el peligro inminente, el amor que llega como una revelaci\u00f3n deslumbradora\u2014 contin\u00faan formando el car\u00e1cter del protagonista a lo largo de un viaje que es met\u00e1fora de la vida.
