Simenontermin\u00f3 la escritura de esta novela en Golden Gate, Cannes (Alpes-Maritimes),el 16 de abril de 1957. Teo no hasido mimado por la vida: tuerto de nacimiento, ni\u00f1o de la asistencia, hoyabandonado por su mujer. Jefemodesto de estaci\u00f3n en la l\u00ednea Par\u00eds-Calais, cerca de Amiens, vive con undeseo: Un d\u00eda, les ense\u00f1ar\u00e9.\u00bfEnse\u00f1ar qu\u00e9, y a qui\u00e9n? \u00c9l mismo no lo sabe. Un d\u00eda,el cad\u00e1ver de un negro es descubierto cerca de la l\u00ednea del ferrocarril. La hip\u00f3tesisque prevalece es que, antes de llegar a Versins sin observar la parada, elhombre salt\u00f3 en marcha despu\u00e9s de la salida del tren, en la curva pr\u00f3xima. PeroTeo sabe sobre eso m\u00e1s que otros: al anochecer, en el tren de ida vio al negrotomar la direcci\u00f3n de Versins. Ha llegado su hora: va ense\u00f1arles su importancia\u2026 \u00bfSin embargo, si hubocrimen, cu\u00e1l es el m\u00f3vil? Por entonces, en Versins,el rico Cadieu acaba de morir y sabemos por otro lado que su hijo, fallecidodesde hace tiempo, se hab\u00eda expatriado en Oubangui donde hab\u00eda tenido un hijocon una ind\u00edgena. \u00bfSus dos sobrinos, Nicol\u00e1s y Francisco, habr\u00edan liquidado alnieto, un obst\u00e1culo en el reparto de la herencia? Es aquel en quien piensa Teo,que sospecha m\u00e1s precisamente en Nicol\u00e1s, un mat\u00f3n. Imagina entonces unaestratagema que le permitir\u00eda sacar provecho de la situaci\u00f3n: m\u00e1s que denunciarel crimen a la polic\u00eda, chantajear\u00e1 a Nicol\u00e1s; \u00e9ste se encontrar\u00e1 satisfechodesembolsando algunos millones que, asegur\u00e1ndole la paz, proporcionen a Teo unajubilaci\u00f3n dorada, un sue\u00f1o digno, mezcla de triunfo y de rencor, a\u00fan m\u00e1savivado por el alcohol. Mientras que Teo hace proyectos y se calla, lainvestigaci\u00f3n progresa y finaliza: son los herederos quienes eliminaron alnegro. Ante las detenciones uno se suicida y el otro huye.
