En efecto, la trama de sunovela gira en torno a Jacques y su amo, dos hombres que viajan a trav\u00e9s de loscampos de Francia y que, en el \u00ednterin, cuentan con el tiempo suficiente parareferirse an\u00e9cdotas de su pasado, recordar personajes o situaciones y colegirde todo reflexiones filos\u00f3ficas. Adem\u00e1s, como Sancho y don Alonso Quijano, lospersonajes de Diderot tambi\u00e9n viven aventuras, pernoctan en posadas en las queescuchan toda clase de intrigas, se ven inmersos en duelos y conflictos dehonor, y discrepan en sus opiniones sobre la vida, el amor o el destino. Al iniciodel relato, el amo de Jacques pide a \u00e9ste que le cuente la historia de susamores, a lo cual accede el sirviente, dado su gusto por las narraciones. Sinembargo, a ra\u00edz de los detalles con que Jacques aborda su descripci\u00f3n y lasinevitables interrupciones que sufre \u00e9sta, su discurso se prolonga hasta elfinal de la novela. As\u00ed, tenemos un argumento distendido, una historia central(compuesta por el viaje y el relato de Jacques) que ocurre en el presente, perotambi\u00e9n un sinn\u00famero de referencias al pasado, analepsis de todo tipo (losantiguos patronos de Jacques, su vida militar, los enredos amorosos del amo) y,adem\u00e1s, digresiones causadas por la inclusi\u00f3n de personajes secundarios,debates filos\u00f3ficos y las constantes intervenciones de Diderot. Frente acada situaci\u00f3n que vayan descubriendo en su itinerario \u2014el enga\u00f1o de una mujera su patr\u00f3n, la obsesi\u00f3n de dos sujetos por los duelos a muerte, lasacusaciones cernidas sobre un buen fraile\u2014 siempre sentenciar\u00e1 Jacques con lamisma f\u00f3rmula: \u00abTodo lo ocurrido estaba escrito all\u00e1 arriba\u00bb. Su amo,contribuir\u00e1 a hacer m\u00e1s evidente el determinismo del criado, pues \u00e9l es unhombre pr\u00e1ctico, y se sorprender\u00e1 continuamente con los alcances que aquelladoctrina puede tener; a veces, incluso, se ver\u00e1 doblegado por la fuerza de\u00e9sta, hecho que invertir\u00e1 las relaciones de poder que existen entre ambos hombres.
