Lleva tambi\u00e9n el barco la sobrecarga de una dama hermosa y aviesa, un capit\u00e1n m\u00e1s dado a la bravuconer\u00eda que al buen sentido, pajes que traman trampas a escondidas, embustes suficientes para llenar de misterio las sentinas\u2026Ambos se dirigen a Europa (a Inglaterra y Holanda, respectivamente) en busca de su libertad, pero el azar les depara un futuro bien distinto. Impulsado por los vientos del enga\u00f1o, el barco en que navegan otea un horizonte de misterios, sobresaltos, esperanzas y aventuras por tierras y mares de Am\u00e9rica, \u00c1frica y Europa.\u00abQue no soy un santo, bien lo s\u00e9. La cuenta llevo yo de mis pecados y es tal su n\u00famero que mejor ser\u00e1 dejarla a un lado, no venga a entorpecer este relato\u00bb. Avisado queda el lector: Tom\u00e1s Bird, protagonista y narrador de estas aventuras, empieza por reconocer su escasa santidad. As\u00ed las cosas, no podr\u00e1 sorprendernos asistir, a medida que se vaya desenvolviendo el relato, a una sarta de embustes, trampas y enga\u00f1os, a toda clase de cambios y mudanzas. Y no s\u00f3lo por su parte: tambi\u00e9n Crist\u00f3bal Mendieta, el hombre de los mil nombres, el jud\u00edo converso, vive parapetado en el embuste. Har\u00e1 bien el lector en ser prudente, pues no necesariamente es la verdad quien sucede a la mentira, sino que \u00e9sta puede perpetuarse de aventura en aventura, de sorpresa en sorpresa.
