En la Catalu\u00f1a rural del siglo XIX (1815-1881) cuando a\u00fan conviven los modelos de una sociedad en transformaci\u00f3n: la nobleza y la burgues\u00eda industrial, que viene a sustituirla, Rosendo Roca es capaz de enfrentarse a los poderes reinantes y triunfar. Ya desde ni\u00f1o Rosendo es diferente y taciturno. Le marca profundamente la delicada salud de su madre. Pero ante todo una extraordinaria voluntad que s\u00f3lo llama a los pioneros. Pero la suerte le sonr\u00ede cuando est\u00e1 a punto de perderlo todo. Un viajero escoc\u00e9s, Henry, sabr\u00e1 valorarlo y se asociar\u00e1 con \u00e9l. La industria del carb\u00f3n acaba de nacer. La herencia de la tierra es el retrato hist\u00f3rico de una \u00e9poca: desde la guerra de la independencia, atravesando el turbulento reinado de Fernando VII, el hambre vivida en los pueblos durante la guerra civil y las revueltas de 1835 a 1854, la revoluci\u00f3n de 1868, el desastre colonial y el ulterior renacimiento pol\u00edtico.
