La magistral prosa de Mir\u00f3 intensifica esta honda meditaci\u00f3n, realizada con lucidez y amor, sobre la condici\u00f3n humana, el poder transformador del tiempo y la b\u00fasqueda de la felicidad, dando cuerpo a un mundo complejo y denso, percibido y gozado con demoradad sensualidad mediante los cinco sentidos. El prop\u00f3sito mironiano de &#8216;decir las cosas por insinuaci\u00f3n&#8217; afecta a todos los estratos de la novela, y sit\u00faa al escritor alicantino entre los m\u00e1s radicales renovadores de un g\u00e9nero que, en aquellos a\u00f1os, estaba sufriendo profundos cambios. Esta novela original y deslumbrante, profunda y emotiva, viene a ser la culminaci\u00f3n de la novel\u00edstica de Gabriel Mir\u00f3 y una de las obras maestras de la novel\u00edstica espa\u00f1ola.La unidad de la obra reside en el especial tratamiento temporal y la organizaci\u00f3n del texto, con una trama desarrollada entre la llegada y la muerte del obispo. El motivo del ferrocarril, met\u00e1fora de modernidad durante el XIX, desencadena la lucha entre tradicionalistas y liberalistas. No es una simple censura de la vida provinciana. Nos encontramos con varias dial\u00e9cticas: lo tradicional frente a lo liberal, el amor frente al ego\u00edsmo, el principio de autoridad frente al instinto. El tema de la profunda tristeza que imprimen los deseos insatisfechos vertebra todo el libro.En Nuestro Padre San Daniel, primera parte de dos novelas, Gabriel Mir\u00f3 recrea la Orihuela de su infancia y la Espa\u00f1a de su tiempo convocando a la vida a Oleza. Puebla de vida sus calles provincianas y va pintando aqu\u00ed y all\u00e1 olores y ambientes que, no obstante estar reci\u00e9n hechos, evocan calles olvidadas en la memoria, \u00e1rboles vistos en la infancia y verdores de otros campos en d\u00edas m\u00e1s felices. Se trata de una \u201cnovela de capellanes y devotos\u201d, como advierte el subt\u00edtulo. Aunque lo mismo podr\u00eda decir \u201cnovela sensual y anticlerical\u201d.
