Novela en que se crea al profesor Challenger y que figura entre las historias mejor contadas de este narrador fuera de serie. El argumento nos parece hoy manido, a causa de las incontables imitaciones que ha soportado [&#8230;]; puede resumirse as\u00ed: el profesor Challenger, viajando por Am\u00e9rica del Sur, descubre rastros de vida prehist\u00f3rica en las selvas amaz\u00f3nicas; vuelve a Londres y prepara una expedici\u00f3n para verificar sus teor\u00edas; encuentran estos exploradores una meseta inaccesible en plena jungla, habitada por bestias antediluvianas y razas en los albores de la humanidad; tras numerosos peligros, vuelven a Londres con sorprendentes pruebas de su descubrimiento. Conan Doyle consigue narrar toda la aventura, situando siempre al lector en el punto m\u00e1s adecuado para disfrutar de ella, por lo que cada escena adquiere una suerte de m\u00e1gica intensidad gozosa: El mundo perdido es una novela que se lee en un estado de \u00e1nimo permanentemente jubiloso, propia de una v\u00edspera de fiesta o del alba enso\u00f1ada y excitante en que vamos a emprender un viaje anhelado. Es un libro escrito con buen humor, en el que el autor contagia a su p\u00fablico el disfrute que le produjo componer cada p\u00e1gina. Las figuras de los dos cient\u00edficos expedicionarios, Challenger y su rival Summerlee, quedan simp\u00e1ticamente maltratadas.
