Sus ataques vienen continuados por desmayos, y tras despertarse horas despu\u00e9s, no recuerda nada de lo que ha hecho. Durante uno de dichos ataques, ataca a dos personas, a las que produce lesiones graves. Su situaci\u00f3n le convierte en un candidato id\u00f3neo para una operaci\u00f3n sin precedentes consistente en implantar unos electrodos y un miniordenador en su cerebro para controlar los ataques. Dicha operaci\u00f3n est\u00e1 a cargo de los cirujanos Ellis y Morris.El procedimiento y sus consecuencias son cuestionados por la psiquiatra Janet Ross y por el profesor Manon, argumentado el desorden mental del sujeto y los cr\u00edmenes cometidos. Aunque Ellis admite que no se trata de una cura, sino de un modo de estimular el cerebro cuando se aproxima un ataque, deciden seguir adelante con la operaci\u00f3n, durante la cual se implantan cuarenta electrodos en el cerebro de Benson, controlados por una bater\u00eda de plutonio en su hombro.Durante las pruebas posteriores, consistentes en activar los electrodos dentro de su cabeza uno a uno hasta averiguar cu\u00e1l detendr\u00eda un posible episodio epil\u00e9ptico, Ross descubre que Benson est\u00e1 aprendiendo a provocarse ataques de forma involuntaria porque le producen una descarga de placer, lo cual est\u00e1n conduciendo a un incremento de la frecuencia de dichos ataques. Al ir a comprobar el estado de Benson, descubre que este ha desaparecido.Mientras intenta localizar a Benson, Ross es contactada por la polic\u00eda, que le informa del asesinato de una mujer que estaba relacionada con Benson.
