Sit\u00faa a sus personajes en un inquietante futuro en que la barbarie es ya total y cada ser humano se ve obligado a luchar por sobrevivir. Desde un edificio de apartamentos, en la ciudad, frente al parque, la superviviente observa los grupos de adolescentes integrados en bandas destructoras. La gente abandona la ciudad y se reorganiza tribalmente. Las plantas surgen entre el asfalto, los animales dom\u00e9sticos se tornan salvajes o corren peligro de ser devorados. Emily es una ni\u00f1a de tres a\u00f1os que es abandonada en el apartamento de la protagonista junto a su gato Hugo (que es tambi\u00e9n medio perro). En muy poco tiempo la ni\u00f1a atraviesa las diversas fases de la adolescencia y se convierte en una problem\u00e1tica mujer.Con Memorias de una Superviviente Doris Lessing afirma haber escrito su autobiograf\u00eda. Al filo de la ciencia-ficci\u00f3n, con una pesimista \u00f3ptica de futuro, la narraci\u00f3n alcanza valores simb\u00f3licos. Su autora se sirve de una perspectiva claramente femenina, puesta brillantemente de manifiesto en El Cuaderno Dorado (1962), en el ciclo Hijos de la Violencia (1951-69) y en la tetralog\u00eda Canopus in Argos-Archives (1979-82). En su novela La Buena Terrorista (1986) retorna a un espacio narrativo m\u00e1s realista, aunque ir\u00f3nico y demoledor.
